It is the most important nutrient for plant growth. Without nitrogen, plants cannot make chlorophyll, the green pigment that makes photosynthesis possible. Chlorophyll enables plants to produce carbohydrates and proteins needed for plant growth. Phosphorus (P) encourages the growth and strength of stems, flowers, and roots. Phosphorus is critical to photosynthesis because it works with nitrogen to create proteins and enzymes that help the plant make energy from sunlight. Plants require more phosphorus than nitrogen or potassium because it is a structural component in plants.
